Tap to Pay

How does Tap to Pay work?

Zettle allows you to take contactless payments by tapping your customer’s card to the back of your Android phone. Simply add products to your shopping basket and then select Tap to Pay as the payment method.

Tap to Pay works on devices with Android 8.0, NFC capabilities and Google Play Services.

Increased contactless limits
Major card networks have raised the contactless card limit to £100 (from £30-£45). This means your customers can simply tap their card or device when they want to pay for any amount up to £100.

How to take Tap to Pay payments

  1. Go to “Tap to Pay” in Settings and tap “Activate”.
This step may take a few minutes.
  2. Add a product to your shopping basket or enter a custom amount.
  3. Tap “Charge”, select “Tap to Pay” as the payment method and show your customer the amount.
  4. Instruct the customer to tap their card or payment device (smartphone, Apple Watch, etc.) to the back of your Android phone to pay.
  5. Make sure you keep the card in contact with your phone until it has been properly read and you feel your phone buzz.
  6. When the payment is approved, you can text or email a receipt to your customer.

Pricing

Frequently asked questions

What do I do if a customer wants to pay with a card you don’t accept?
If a customer presents an unsupported card, ask if they have another card or cash. You can also send them a Payment Link so that they can pay from their phone. To do this simply select “Send link” as the payment method when you check out.

What do I do if the payment is above £100?
If the customer pays with their mobile wallet (such as Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay) and they verify the payment on their device, the payment should go through just fine above this limit.

However, there are card purchases above £100 (the limit for contactless payments) that are not supported with Tap to Pay.

If your customer wishes to pay with a card that needs to be inserted into a reader, you’ll need a Zettle Reader and your customer will need to enter their PIN when they pay.
If you don’t have a Zettle Reader, you can send your customer a Payment Link so that they can pay from their phone. To do this simply select “Send link” as the payment method when you check out.

Payment errors below £100
Occasionally, card issuers may require your customers to enter their PIN even when the purchase is below £100. This is a random safety check to authenticate that the cardholder is present.

If you do not have a Zettle card reader, ask your customer if they have another card or a mobile wallet (Apple Pay, Samsung Pay or Google Pay) to make the payment. You can also send them a Payment Link so that they can pay from their phone. To do this simply select “Send link” as the payment method when you check out.

Can I still use Samsung Pay/Google Pay when I buy things?
Yes, now you can both make and take payments using your Android phone.
